Ruth Marian Alexander Zimmerman, 91, of Woodcrest Villa, Lancaster went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 23, at 10:15 p.m. at the Mennonite Home. She was the wife of the late John H. Zimmerman.

Born in Lancaster, the former Alexander’s Grocery Store on Main St. in Manheim was her parents’ business and her original home. After graduating from Manheim Central High School, she attended beautician’s school and worked as a hairdresser in Lancaster.

During WWII, she moved to Richland, WA; Oak Ridge, TN; and Poughkeepsie, NY as her husband worked on the Manhattan Project. She was known for her beautiful singing voice and made many appearances to perform at special occasions.

After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman returned to Lancaster where she worked as an aid for the I.U.13. She participated in VBS and other church functions at the First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster where she was a member for more than 50 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Diana, wife of Walter Zilahy of Higganum, CT; a son, Michael, husband of Barbara Marcantonia Zimmerman of Lancaster; and grandchildren, Matthew, husband of Melissa Frey of WV, and Lauren of Brooklyn, NY.
