Walter E. Hess, 88, formerly of Willow Street, died Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Home.
He was the husband of the late Dorothy Gochnauer Hess who died in 2010. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Amos H. and Mary M. Eshelman Hess.
Walter was a plumber most of his life and retired from E. H. Gochnauer Son, Inc. where he had been employed for 38 years. He was a member of the Byerland Mennonite Church. Walter was known as a handyman and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking. His interests included anything to do with tractors.
Surviving are two sons, David E. husband of Joyce Lentz Hess of Decatur, GA, and Donald W. husband of Diane Miller Hess of Willow Street; four daughters, Gloria J. wife of Clifford Bender of Lancaster, Karen J. wife of Dale Glass-Hess of Atlanta, GA, Susan K. Rittenhouse of Ewing, NJ, and Kathy M. wife of Dennis Dagen of Pequea; 14 grandchildren, 12 great granddaughters and two great grandsons; two brothers, David husband of Betty Hess of Willow Street, and Melvin Hess of Conestoga. He was preceded in death by six sisters, Anna Ruth Hess, Ida Hostettler, Catherine Good, Suie Hammer, Grace Groff and Helen Craul.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at the Byerland Mennonite Church, 931 Byerland Church Road, Willow Street, PA with the Rev. Joe C. Garber officiating. Friends may greet the family at the church on Friday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service . Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the Byerland Mennonite Cemetery.
