Ruth B. Schwanger

Ruth B. Schwanger, 95, of Lancaster, entered into eternal rest on August 2, 2012 at Homestead Village after a brief illness. Born on August 10, 1916, in Port Royal, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Rubin and Annie Burd. She was the wife of the late D. Mark Schwanger, who died in December of 1972.
Ruth moved to Lancaster at the age of 18, where she met and later married Mark. In 1936, they helped establish Schwanger Brothers & Co. Inc.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, crafting, and entertaining. She was a past member of the Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster, Knights Templar, and Eastern Star. She acted as the Volunteer Coordinator of the Hospital Chaplaincy Program at Lancaster General Hospital. She was recognized for her volunteer efforts during food distributions for the Community Action Program of Lancaster, making home food deliveries.
On August 10, 1999, Ruth’s 83rd birthday, former Mayor, Charles W. Smithgall presented Ruth with a Proclamation from the City of Lancaster declaring August 10, 1999, as Ruth B. Schwanger Day. Ruth also was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for her volunteer work with the Lion’s Club of Lancaster.
She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Lancaster and a current member of Highland Presbyterian Church. She frequently attended services and participated in special events with her daughter at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
Ruth is survived by her son, David, husband of Linda Schwanger and daughter, Nancy, wife of Leonard Maurer. In addition, she is survived by 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 3 nephews. She was predeceased by 8 siblings
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a funeral service on Monday, August 6, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, PA with the Reverend Richard Niewoehner and the Reverend Mary-Margaret Ruth officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 9:30 AM. until the time of service. Interment will be private in Juniata County.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

We are so sorry to hear of Mrs. Schwanger passing away. We live two doors down at 2018. She was such a nice lady and my youngest daughter and I enjoyed visiting with her not too long ago.
