Ruth Ann Harrington Dunn died November 14, 2012 at the Mennonite Home after a brief illness; she was 87 years old and is now re-united with her husband of 62 years, Lewis Dunn, who died in December 2011.
Ruth was born February 17, 1925 in Mt. Vernon, MD, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Harrington and Etta Dashiell Harrington. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1942 at Washington High School in Princess Anne, MD. After earning a Business Diploma from Beacom College in 1943, Ruth worked for seven years at the Hercules Powder Co. in Wilmington, DE . It was there that she met Lew, and they were married on April 1, 1949.
For two years during the Korean Conflict, Ruth and Lew lived in Puerto Rico, where he served in the U.S. Navy. After moving to Lancaster in 1952, Ruth was active in the YWCA Y-teen program and raised three children.
From 1972 to 1985, Ruth worked as the Office Manager and Treatment Coordinator for Dr. Richard H. Albright, Jr.’s Orthodontics practice.
Always interested in words, ideas and people, Ruth formed and belonged to several book groups for many years, and volunteered with the YWCA, Church Women United, the Red Cross Disaster Relief Committee, the Food and Clothing Banks, and, with Lew, helped with Meals on Wheels.
In 1974, she was the first woman to be elected president of the Lancaster Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
In retirement, Ruth and Lew travelled to see the Wonders of the World, before moving to Woodcrest Villa in 2004. A talented seamstress, Ruth made over a hundred quilts, and also amassed a collection of antique hatpins and holders.
Ruth is survived by a son, Kameron, husband of Deirdre, Refton, PA, a daughter Benay, wife of Gary Bodrog, Crofton, MD, a granddaughter, Brittany Rankin, and a sister, Esther Ball of Eden, MD. In addition to her husband Lew and a beloved son, Rondeigh Harrington Dunn, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin, Herbert and Charles Harrington.
Ruth had a passionate penchant for the color purple, as well as for the life of the mind, and her smiling blue eyes and inquisitive interest in people will be greatly missed.
A memorial service celebrating Ruth’s life will be held Saturday December 1, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Mennonite Home Chapel, 1520 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The family will greet visitor from 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in Ruth’s memory to Hospice and Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA, 17601.

I first met Ruth about 15 years ago when I was visiting Deirdre and Cameron, coming over the pond from my home in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Ruth always made us feel welcome and was such an interesting, educated, vibrant woman who loved words, books and the world around her. Myself, matthew, aysha, and Liam will be wearing purple in her honour and be raising a glass to her, with best wishes to Benay and Cam and all family.
