Ruby Madalyn Angel of Willow Street, Pennsylvania, died on October 31st at the age of 96. Madalyn, the daughter of Lottie and Alvin Blades, was born in Crisfield, Maryland. She attended Western Maryland College and majored in English and French, graduating cum laude in 1938. She joined the English faculty of Hyattsville High School in suburban Washington where she met Ralph Angel. They married in June 1941 and enjoyed 66 years together until his passing in 2007. They became world travelers, starting in 1950 with a summer-long tour of western Europe. They also pursued a mutual interest in the theatre. They adapted a short story entitled Prelude into a three-act play that was awarded first prize by the Pittsburgh Drama League in 1945.

Madalyn taught English, journalism and drama for more than two decades at Hyattsville, Mt. Rainier and High Point High Schools. She also directed numerous plays at Mt. Rainier, enriching the lives of her student actors and earning their unending admiration. Some of her students continued to write and visit until her final days.

A memorial service in her memory will be held at the Thomas Auditorium at Willow Valley Lakes, 300 Willow Valley Lakes Dr., Willow Street, PA, Sunday, November 4th, at 2 PM. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Ralph and Madalyn Angel Memorial Fund (which supports an annual scholarship at Buck Lodge Middle School), c/o PNC Bank, 782 West Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, Pennsylvania, 19087.

Condolences for the family of “Ruby Madalyn Angel”

Condolence from Grant & Mary Zerbe on November 5th, 2012 8:19 pm

Dear Family of Ruby Madalyn Angel,
Our hearts were saddened to learn of Madalyn’s passing today. She was a dear and beloved friend of my parents, Joe & Monni Lester. Our parents met Ralph & Madalyn upon their move into The Gables at Willow Valley and were so blessed by their friendship. Madalyn was an “angel” to our mother, as she was one of my mother’s dearest friends offering love and support all throughout our parents’ 10 yrs at Willow Valley. I had the privilege of getting to know Madalyn during my 2-1/2 months stay in 2008 caring for my parents during my mother’s cancer surgery and recovery. Madalyn was a huge blessing bringing light and encouragement every time she visited mom at Lakeside and during their numerous telephone visits. I had the privilege of visiting Madalyn in her home at the Gables and loved afternoon visits in her library room. She shared the poem “Bartar” with me as well as our eldest daughter. We remember Madalyn with fondness, love and gratitude for the friendship she shared with our mother and extended to all her children and grandchildren. We pray God’s love will comfort your hearts as you adapt to life without her. Madalyn and Ralph touched a lot of lives through their gift of teaching, which extended well beyond the classroom. We are sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Grant & Mary Zerbe Lustre, MT

Mrs. Angel was my journalism teacher for two years at High Point. She was a warm carry person who always had a smile and encouraging word. She was my favorite teacher as she took an interest in my work. I held her in high esteem and really respected her. I know she must be happy now to be home with her husband and our God.
