Richard E. Omundsen, 85, of Lancaster, PA, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, May 17th at Brethren Village.

Born in Staten Island, New York, Mr. Omundsen was the son of the late Oscar and Julia Ganss Omundsen.  He was the husband of the late Dorothy Huttar Omundsen, who died in September, 2009.

He received his B.A. degree from Oswego State Teachers College, and his Master’s degree in Elementary School Administration at Columbia University.

Dick invested his entire life in future generations.  He was a teacher, elementary school principal, and school board member.  An Eagle Scout, Dick also served with the Boy Scouts as a scoutmaster and summer camp director.

After retiring from his public school career, Dick worked as a substitute teacher at the Milton Hershey School and various schools in the Lancaster area.

He attended First United Methodist Church in Lancaster and was a member of the Chancel Choir and the Wesley Singers.  Most recently, he worshiped at Brethren Village Chapel and sang with two choirs there.

Dick was preceded in death by brothers Elbert and Howard, and is survived by daughters Leah (Terry) Slye of Minneapolis, MN  and  Dr. Beth Ann Omundsen (Van) Ott of Harpers Ferry, WV; sons Peter (Elaine) Omundsen of Lancaster, PA and David (Julie) Omundsen of Wichita, KS; foster sons Paul (Joyce) St. Cyr and William (Cathy) St. Cyr; thirteen grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service in First United Methodist Church, corner of Duke and Walnut Sts., Lancaster, PA 17602 on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Kerry L. Leeper officiating.  A visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of the service.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Brethren Village Good Samaritan Fund, 3001 Lititz, Pike, Lancaster, PA 17606.   Interment will be private in Landis Valley Mennonite Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

    Omundsen Family,
We are so sorry to read about the passing of your father. Dick was such a good neighbor for so many years. We miss seeing him out in the yard mowing and puttering around. You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.
