William W. Moyer

d. June 14, 2010

William W. Moyer, 61, of Lancaster died unexpectedly on June 14 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Sunbury, he was the son of the late George W. and Helen Y. Moyer. Bill was the husband of Melanie (Molly) Everts Moyer, with whom he would have celebrated 39 years of marriage on August 22. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children, Katherine E. Mausolf (Andrew J.) of Lancaster and Bradley E. Moyer of Lancaster; grandchildren: Natalie, Fiona and Lily, all of Lancaster; and sister, Diane E. Moyer, of Harrisburg.

A graduate of Manheim Twp. High School, he earned a B.A. from Lebanon Valley College and an M.S. and a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. In 1972, Bill was awarded a Steinman Foundation Fellowship in Psychology. From 1974-1975, Bill served Clinical Psychological Internships in Pittsburgh at the V.A. Neuropsychiatric Hospital and the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

Bill began his career as a Visiting Professor of Psychology at Franklin and Marshall College and in 1977, he joined the faculty at Millersville University. While there he served as a Professor in the Psychology Department, including ten years as its Chair. He also provided service on departmental committees and the university’s Academic Policies Committee. After retiring in 2008, he was granted the title of Professor of Psychology Emeritus.

He was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

His community involvement included serving as a consultant with the Lancaster Theological Seminary, Public Defender’s Office, Prospectus, Smith and Robson Forensic Engineers and Scientists, Community Services Group and the Memtest Corporation. He also volunteered with the Lancaster Red Cross Disaster Relief Unit locally and in Puerto Rico where he provided psychological services to relief workers.

Bill’s motto following his retirement was “Every day is Saturday for me!” He made every day count by spending his time at his very own “Paladin’s Playground” on the Little Conestoga where he enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities with his family and close friends. While “Papa” enjoyed watching his granddaughters grow, he was happiest when he was creating gifts for them with his woodworking tools.

The family wishes to thank the staff of LGH’s ICU for the compassionate care they provided to us and Bill as well as the countless people who offered prayers and support.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 21, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 West Chestnut Street, Lancaster, with Rev. John W. Morris officiating. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be in St. John’s Columbarium.
