Susan L. (Smith) Ackerman, 77, formerly of Lancaster, PA, passed away into the loving arms of Jesus on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at her home – Traditions at Brookside – in McCordsville, IN. She fought a valiant five-year battle with Endometrial/Uterine Cancer.
Born on October 4, 1946, in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. Smith and L. Evelyn (Gonder) Smith. Her husband, Gerald H. (Jerry) Ackerman, Sr, preceded her in death on January 23, 2015.
She was a proud 1964 graduate of McCaskey High School and throughout her lifetime worked at RCA, for “Toy Ladies”, as a stay-at-home Mom, and for AT&T and Bell Atlantic. Her hobbies/interests included loving on some furry friends through the years – especially her late dog, Benji, watching HGTV, playing “Words With Friends”, visiting to welcome new residents in the facility where she lived, she loved a good cup of decaf coffee or chai, and absolutely anything having to do with her grandchildren. She believed in Jesus Christ and we are so thankful that she is no longer in pain.
She was a member of the former Abbeyville Road Christian Church in Lancaster and current member of Onward Church in Fishers, IN.
Susan is survived by a daughter, Kimberly N., wife of Jeff Worley of Willow Street; a son, Gerald H. “Jerry” Ackerman, Jr., husband of Mitzi, and grandchildren: Julianne (Logan) Carmack, Ben, Ashlyn, Abigail, and Olivia Ackerman, all of IN; a sister Jean (Ron) Woland, a brother Robert E. Smith, Jr., and a sister Evelyn Ann (Rick) Henderson, all in PA. Also surviving are a host of nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Grace Community Church, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street, PA. A viewing will precede the service at the church starting at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the children suggest donating to your favorite charity in her memory.
