Steven Scaricamazza, beloved and faithful husband of Betsy Swartz, passed away on Saturday, January 21st, 2023, after a serious illness.
Steven was born and raised in Delaware County, PA, to Anthony A. and Annette Scaricamazza. He attended Holy Cross Elementary School and Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, PA. Afterwards he attended Drexel University in Philadelphia and got his Bachelors Degree in Accounting, then settled into a successful career as a CPA. After about 25 years working in accounting, he made a career change to work as a counselor, and obtained much personal satisfaction in helping others.
Steven had a kind heart and an observant mind, connecting concepts together as masterfully as a great teacher. He loved reading and learning and had a deep spiritual well of insights to share with those he had conversations with. He was a wonderful listener and counselor, drawing people closer to talk with him wherever he went.
He was a man of faith who practiced what he believed and always sought to know deeper spiritual truth. He loved contemplation and silent retreats. He was a faithful member of St. James Episcopal Church and served on the altar guild, touching those he served with.
Steven was a constant and devoted fan of Betsy’s violin playing, attending almost every performance she played in and providing her with continual support and encouragement.
We take comfort that our staggering loss means he is now fulfilled and in the perfect presence of the Lord.
He is survived by his wife Betsy, his brother Anthony (Nancy), his mother Annette, and his mother-in-law Verna.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. James Episcopal Church, 119 N. Duke Street, Lancaster PA. The service will also be livestreamed.
Donations in Steven’s memory can be made to St. James Episcopal Church, https://www.saintjameslancaster.org.

Such a gentle and inquisitive man, thoughtful and profound. We are so thankful the Lord saw fit to have Steven’s and Betsy’s path cross with our own. We are richer for it. Steven’s impact is felt even as we mourn this great loss, and his works follow him. I love the picture I have of Steven’s awe and wonder and joy as he experiences the timeless glory of God, now open to him in full.
Much love. “The nearness of God is [your] good.” (Psalm 73:28)
