Ronald A. Blackwell

Ronald Allmond Blackwell passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, June 8th, 2021, after a brief fight against cancer.

Born October 9th, 1939, in Wilmington, Ron grew up in Delaware and graduated from Middletown High School in 1957. His interests in both mechanical and electrical engineering led to service in the Air Force, followed by a career in construction project management, allowing him to travel extensively and work abroad. He spent years overseas working in Greenland, Spain, Italy, Thailand, and Somalia before returning home.

He married his wife Virginia in Italy in 1967. Virginia became his adventure partner and joined him as they continued to work abroad for several more years. Upon returning stateside, they eventually settled in Perryville, Maryland in a ‘house beside the road where he was a friend to man.’ They welcomed a son Adam in 1981 and a daughter Elliott in 1983.

Ron took pride in his years of involvement in the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival held at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. As an avid small wooden boat builder and restorer, he shared his knowledge and experience with people at the festival who became close lifelong friends. In addition, he volunteered with the Chesapeake Wooden Boat Builders School for their summer Teen Boat Building Class and was a lifetime member of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association.

He was active in A.F. & A.M. Union Lodge 48 and a member of the Scottish Rite. As an Air Force veteran, he was a life member of the American Legion Post in Perryville.

He retired from the US Army Corps of Engineers (Baltimore District) in 1997 and then again from General Physics Corporation in 2003.

After his second retirement, he and Virginia moved to Lancaster, PA, where he spent his time working on boats, building, restoring, and tinkering.

Ron was predeceased by his parents Allmond and Adeline, and brother-in-law Robert Quillen. He leaves behind his wife Virginia, his children Adam Blackwell (Elizabeth) and Elliott McElroy (Kevin), his four grandchildren, Beckett, Charlotte, Oliver and Poppy, his sisters Alberta Kirk (Merritt), Alice Danner (Ralph) and Harriet Quillen, in addition to many friends, far and wide.
