Richard Dale Faulkner, Sr.

Richard Dale Faulkner, Sr., age 88, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on Thursday February 11, 2010 with his family by his side. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Dick was born in North Bay, NY on April 5, 1921 and grew up in Bellerose, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1939 and Alfred University with a B.S. in ceramic engineering in 1944. He was a member of Keramos, the ceramic engineering honor society.
He was employed by RCA for 43 years as a product development engineer in the Design and Development Lab in Lancaster, PA. While working at RCA, he contributed to the US military effort during World War II by improving the production of radar kinescopes for the US Navy and making other technical contributions.
He was awarded over 40 US patents during his career. In the 1950s he was on the team that developed color picture tubes for television. He contributed to the development of new equipment for photographing the lunar surface during NASA’s missions to the moon in the mid-1960s. Other technical innovations included developing photomultiplier tubes used in night vision equipment and medical imaging technology.
He attended First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, PA.
An avid amateur photographer, he won a national photography contest in the 1940s and later joined the Lancaster Camera Club. He was an adult volunteer for the Lancaster-area Boy Scout Council.
He was a long-time member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. He served as President of the Conestoga Valley Chapter and was on the state guild’s board of directors. He was instrumental in relocating the Pennsylvania Guild’s Craft Show to Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster.
Dick and his son, Rick Faulkner, founded the Long’s Park Art and Craft Show in Lancaster, PA in 1979. With support from his family, he built the show from the ground up, and was the Director of the show for 15 years through 1994. The show has been ranked as one of the top art and craft shows in the country for many years.
In his retirement years, he worked with son Rick at Barrick Design creating wonderful hand-crafted candles.
He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Dorr Faulkner; his mother, Leona Pearl Ellis Faulkner; and his brother, Donald Dorr Faulkner, Sr.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Marion L. Faulkner, of 63 years; his daughter, Barbara L. Faulkner of Houston, TX; his son, Richard D. Faulkner, Jr. and wife Margrethe A. Faulkner of Pequea, PA; his granddaughters, Erika A. and Katrina E. Faulkner; and nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Richard D. Faulkner to Alfred University, 1 Saxon Dr., Alfred, NY 14802; or the charity of the donor’s choice.
Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral service, which will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 140 East Orange Street, Lancaster, PA on Saturday, February 20. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and will be followed by the service at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary with the Rev. Donald Hackett officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, South Dansville, NY.
