Richard graduated from McCaskey high school and served in the Navy during World War II, stationed in Hawaii. Later, he worked in banking and was a certified bank auditor for many years until his retirement.
In his lifetime, Richard enjoyed playing sports, boating, masonry and carpentry. He especially enjoyed music–playing his saxophone and singing in the church choir. His family and friends knew him as a man of quiet strength, kindness, wit, and humility.
Richard is survived by his beloved daughter, Connie L. (Doug, deceased) Bortzfield. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lois (Waters) Bowers, his second wife Helen (Gregg) Young Bowers, his sister Zola Bowers, and his brother William.
A private interment service for friends and family will be held at the Millersville Mennonite cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Caring Hospice, 101 Good Dr. Unit 1, Lancaster, PA 17603.
