Norine Roth Grantz

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33

Norine E. Roth Grantz, 94, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday afternoon, April 24, 2022, in Milton, Massachusetts, after suffering a serious stroke.

Norine was born on September 22, 1927, in Reamstown, PA, to Herbert and Ellen (Echternacht) Roth. Attending the Church of the Nazarene, Norine was saved at the age of fourteen, and soon felt called to missions. She graduated valedictorian from her high school and went on to graduate as a registered nurse from New England Deaconess Hospital Nursing School of Boston, Massachusetts, in 1950, and from Eastern Nazarene College of Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1951. In the fall of 1952, she headed for Peru, South America, as a missionary through the Church of the Nazarene.

In Peru, Norine served as a missionary nurse, working first in the capital city of Lima, learning more Spanish and working in the local church, before traveling to the jungles of Moyabamba, to the north in Cajamarca, and eventually to the mountains of Chota, where she opened a clinic.

While in Peru, Norine met her beloved husband, Howard Grantz – also a young missionary from Pennsylvania. They were married on January 1, 1956, in the mountains of Chota. While on the mission field they were also blessed with the births of their three children, Joseph, Connie, and John. Together Norine and Howard served all across Peru for a combined total of over 40 years.

Following their service as missionaries, Norine and Howard moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where Norine served for many years as a nurse at the local hospital, as a private duty nurse, and later on as a hospice nurse. Throughout her life, she led Bible studies, Vacation Bible Schools, Sunday School, and many other ministries, through which she had the joy of seeing many come to Christ. She served as the organist for her church and also blessed many over the years with her ability to play piano, organ, guitar, and accordion, even teaching these instruments to others. In 2003, Norine and Howard moved to a missionary retirement village in Bradenton, Florida, where they would live for nine years. Norine always loved life, and getting to volunteer at the local hospital, cook delicious meals (which she loved to share with others, much to the delight of all who got to taste them!), make beautiful greeting cards, walk, bike, bowl, play music, swim, enjoy the Florida beaches, participate in book clubs, play table games with family and friends, and spend time with her beloved husband. When Howard suffered a stroke, they moved up to Massachusetts to move in with their daughter, Connie, and family. Norine and Howard were happily married for 57 years until Howard passed away in 2013. Norine continued to live in Massachusetts, much to the joy of her daughter Connie and her granddaughters Jessica and Rebekah, who got to share their daily life with her. Norine spread the love of Jesus wherever she went and will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know her.

She is survived by her cherished children: son Joseph P. Grantz and wife Saralinn (Hegins, PA), daughter Connie Grantz Vandervort and husband Karl (Weymouth, MA), and son John H. Grantz (Weymouth, MA); her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild:  Holly Grantz (Mike; Bradley (Avery) and Tyler), Hegins, PA, Heidi Fahler (Kevin; Amy and Dylan), Lebanon PA, Joseph P. Grantz Jr. (Hope and Gavin), Lebanon PA, and Jessica and Rebekah Vandervort, Weymouth, MA; her brothers: Franklin Roth (Port Charlotte, FL) and Robert L. Roth (Stevens, PA); and many nephews and nieces.  Norine was predeceased by her devoted husband Howard, her parents, Herbert and Ellen (Echternacht) Roth, and her siblings, Arthur Roth, Nellie Bixler, Emma Roth, Dorothy Reese, and Blanche Roth.
