Mary Joan Barney, 88, of Lancaster, passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Brethren Village, Lititz. Born in Brooklyn NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles F. Braught Sr. and Mary Hipple Braught. She was married for 48 years to the late David J. Barney.
Joan was a 1953 graduate of Mount Joy High School. She was employed at the Armstrong Lancaster Floor Plant from 1956 to 1960 and the Manheim Township School District from 1979 until her retirement in 2002.
She was an active member of Highland Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and Deacon and was active in local missions and Habitat for Humanity. Joan was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Service Sorority. She enjoyed golf, bowling and watching her favorite teams compete.
She is survived by: one daughter, Patricia (Keith) Faller, Lancaster; two sons, Stephen ( JoAnn) Barney, Rockville, MD; Robert (Lee) Barney, Coatesville, PA; five grandchildren, Laura (Chadwick) Badorf, Lancaster; Kelly Faller, Lancaster; Melissa (Robert) Turka, Denver PA; Angela Barney, Highlands Ranch, CO; David Barney, Raleigh, NC; two great-grandchildren, Lillian Badorf and Charles Badorf, Lancaster, PA; one sister, Barbara Crawford, York, PA; one brother, Charles Braught Jr., Lancaster PA.
A memorial service will be held at the Highland Presbyterian Church, 1801 Oregon Pike, Lancaster PA 17601 on Friday, December 8, 2023 at 11 am. The family will visit with friends from 10 am to 11 am at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy PA., Alzheimer’s Association, or the Highland Fund c/o Highland Presbyterian Church.
