Martin George Hermes Of Lancaster, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025 at the age of 87 after a long illness.
He was born on October 23, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York to Madeleine and Matthew Hermes.
Martin (Marty) graduated from Cooper Union in New York City with a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering degree. After college he worked for Atlas (ICI) at Atlas Point in Wilmington, Delaware. He retired after 32 years of service with the company.After enjoying many years in Delaware he and his wife settled in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Marty enjoyed playing bridge, square dancing and woodworking. He was an avid sailor competing in many regattas and taking his family out on the water when he could. As a member of First Presbyterian Church in Newark, Delaware he worked in the memorial garden and did home repair work for those that needed it. Marty was a passionate collector of depression era glass and Fiesta tableware. He had an affinity for dogs, specifically retrievers.
Marty cherished his role as a husband to his beloved wife Carole Hermes of 65 years. He is also survived by his children Kathleen Groover (Brian), Maureen Kane, and Jonathan Hermes (Carolyn); as well as five grandchildren Grace Groover, Tyler Kane, Trad Groover (Morgan), Jocelyn Kane and Andrew Hermes; his brothers Matthew Hermes, Peter Hermes and Joseph Hermes, and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Ann Casey, and son-in-law Christian Kane.
The Memorial Service will be held in the Johnson Auditorium of Willow Valley Manor North, 600 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA 17602 on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 11:00 AM. A visitation will occur from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his name to Habitat for Humanity.
