d. June 11, 2010

Betty Wintersteen, 95, of Manheim Township, died Friday, June 11, 2010 at Hospice of Lancaster County in Mount Joy.

Miss Wintersteen was born in Gordon (Schuylkill County), Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Charles and Annie Irene (Johnson) Wintersteen.

Betty was a retired McCaskey High School math teacher and a former Navy meteorologist. She joined the Navy in 1942 after earning a B.S. at Thiel College and her M.Ed. at University of Pittsburgh. While in the Navy, she served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. After completing her meteorology studies at MIT, she was then assigned to forecasting duties across the country including Corpus Christi, TX and Lakehurst, NJ.

Betty maintained her interest in meteorology after her retirement, volunteering for the Lancaster County Civil Defense flood warning program, and she was always ready to explain just what certain clouds foretold. She loved playing the piano and was a regular lap swimmer into her ’80s. She loved working with the Iris Club’s many activities and was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her brother, John C. of Phoenix, AZ and 14 nieces and nephews.
