Joseph J. (Fofe) Wysock
Joseph J. (Fofe) Wysock was born on November 22, 1927 in Shamokin PA to Joseph and Ester (Quinn) Wysock. He passed away on April 6, 2011 at the Hospice of Lancaster County on Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster. Despite 3 heart surgeries, congestive heart failure, and kidney and lung ailments, he lived to be 83 years old. Known as Pap to his family and friends, he loved spending quality time with his children and grandchildren and watching the Eagles and Phillies on TV. When feeling well enough to do so, he would take great pleasure in going to the grocery store with his caregiver and daughter Lynn. He loved to ride thru his favorite store, John Herr’s, on an electric cart and was always sure to pick up a chocolate pie and put it in the basket.
He graduated in 1945 from Coal Township High School and was a strong and accomplished athlete. He was offered a scholarship for boxing to Penn State University but chose instead to go and support his country in the Korean Conflict. After his time in the Army, he returned to Shamokin where he met his wife, M. Jeanne Snyder. They married in 1949 and lived in Shamokin for a time before eventually moving to Lancaster. Not afraid of hard work, he labored for the railroad and Columbia Malleable before a back injury forced him to look for a less physically demanding type of work.
After he aced the entrance exam for RCA in Lancaster, Pap was offered a position as Tube Builder Experimental. Working in the development lab at RCA, he participated in the design and development of the first color television tubes built in this country. He was especially proud of his achievements in the development lab. He devised a method for perfecting the placement of phosphor dots on the color tube’s screen and was sent to Princeton to explain the technique to the engineers that worked there. That idea was later patented. He was eventually promoted to supervisor of the color tube department, where he managed over 100 employees.
After heart problems forced him to retire early in the 1980’s, he spent the winters with his wife Jeanne at their home on Columbia Avenue in Lancaster. They would spend the summers with their children and grandchildren at their bungalow at White Crystal Beach in Cecil County, Maryland. Pap and Maw lived for their children and grandchildren and cherished every moment they could spend with them. A loving grandfather, he rocked each and every one of his grandchildren to sleep over the years. He always had an entertaining story or joke to tell them or a silly song to sing to them.
Once he retired he spent much of his time cooking and baking. His banana cake was one of his favorite things to bake. He also loved to make scrumptious soups and everyone especially enjoyed his ham salad and ham barbeque. Pap always was sure to make enough for everyone in the entire family. Pap was a selfless and caring man whose love for his family was paramount and shined through in all that he did. Pap also loved to return to his hometown of Shamokin a few times each year to visit with friends and family and eat a hotdog from the Coney Island Luncheonette and stock up on Welsh meatballs from Johnny’s Farm Market.
When his wife Jeanne became too ill to live at home anymore, he endeavored to spend every single day with her in the nursing home. His love for her was selfless and deep. When Jeanne passed away in 2009, he went to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Scott Clark. In their home he received the love and care to help him through the last few years as his health slowly declined. An avid Phillies fan, too weak to open his eyes for long, he listened to the April 1st season opener on his TV in hospice and smiled when he was told that the Phils pulled it out in the bottom of the 9th. He loved life and his family and his sheer will to live and the strength of his character is what got him through the last, often difficult years.
In addition to his daughter and son-in-law he is survived by two sons, Joseph J. Wysock Jr. of Lancaster engaged to Gayle Murray and Stephen J. Wysock of Columbia, married to Brenda Martin. His surviving grandchildren include Cristina Wysock Ward wife of Dennis Ward, Adam Clark husband of Gretchen McNelis, Jesse Clark, Philip Martin, Joe Wysock III husband of Christina Holker, Justin Wysock, and Emily Wysock. Two great-grandchildren Demitri Clark and Riley Sue Thomas also survive him.
A viewing will be held at Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange Street, Lancaster, PA from 12-1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9th to be followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. and a burial service immediately thereafter. After the burial service, family and friends are invited to Amvets Post 19, 715 Fairview Avenue, Lancaster, PA.
