John L. (Jack) Hampton

John L. (Jack) Hampton, 79, beloved husband of Judy Miller Hampton, passed away peacefully July 25 at Homestead Village after battling cancer for 18 months. He was the son of John L. Foy and Dorothea Flanagan Foy and was adopted by P.T. Hampton and Regina Foy Hampton following his mother’s death.

Jack grew up in Meyersdale, Pa. After an honorable discharge from the Army, he graduated from the University of Maryland, where he met his first wife, Constance Cairns. They had three daughters, one of whom died in infancy. In 1977 they moved to the Severna Park, Md., neighborhood of Berrywood, where Jack enjoyed playing bridge and poker, sailing, and entertaining. Constance died in 1988.

In 1993 Jack married Judith Miller Bernstein of Baltimore. After retiring from the federal government, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, particularly taking cruises. Jack also visited Ireland to trace his Irish roots, and was an avid reader. In recent years they lived in Lancaster and New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

Jack could talk to anyone, was quick to laugh at himself, and always had a positive outlook, no matter what the situation. This loyal and caring father and husband will be sorely missed by his wife; his daughter Karin Cernik, of Wichita, Kan., and her husband Dennis; his daughter Jacki Vaughan, of Minneapolis, and her husband Vince; and stepsons Lawrence Biemiller, of Washington, and John Biemiller, of Lancaster, who is engaged to Jen Hess of Lancaster. Jack is also survived by six grandchildren – Nathan and James Biemiller, Erin and Kelly Cernik, and Tucker and Abbie Vaughan – and by his beloved dog, Daisy.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 30, at 10 a.m. in the Village Commons at Homestead Village, 1800 Marietta Pike, Lancaster, Pa. 17603. Greeting will begin at 9:15. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Homestead Endowment Fund at the above address
