Joan Margaret Hawkins

Joan Margaret Hawkins, age 79, of Lancaster, PA, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 11, 2026 while surrounded by family, friends and love.

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Roman A. and Margaret J. (Tetzlaff) Douglas.

She was a 50-year member of Grandview Church in Lancaster where she taught Sunday School, served as president of the United Methodist Women's group and was a Den Mother to Cub Scout Pack 102. She enjoyed volunteering with her husband, Alan at Lumina's Professional Clothing Bank helping people get outfitted for job interviews and new jobs where she loved seeing people smile and stand a bit taller in their new attire. She was passionate about volunteering with the Lancaster Democratic Committee, getting out the vote and supporting dozens of worthy causes.

She earned a B.S. in Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University and a Certificate in Hand and Upper Quarter Rehabilitation from M.C. Hahnaman/Drexel in Philadelphia. Some of her favorite and most impactful jobs were at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and the Visiting Nurse Association of Lancaster.

Joan was an accomplished water color painter who loved painting local farm landscapes and still lifes. Joan also enjoyed dressmaking, quilting, gardening, recycling, biking, swimming, washing dishes by hand, hanging laundry outside to dry in the sun and feeding the neighborhood squirrels.

Joan was the beloved wife of Alan Hawkins to whom she was married for 55-years. She is also survived by her son Mark of Lancaster and his wife Esmirna Mayi, and his children Jantzen and Braeden Hawkins. She is also survived by her son Greg Hawkins and his wife Ashley of Durham, N.C. and their children Hannah, Caleb and Luke.

There will be a memorial service at Grandview Church located at 888 Pleasure Road in Lancaster, PA on Saturday February 7 at 2:00pm with visitation from 1:00-2:00pm.
