Janet Mae Magee

d. July 16, 2010

Janet Mae Magee, 86, of Lancaster, PA, died July 16, 2010, at the Lancaster County Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Born January 17, 1924, in Quarryville, PA, Janet was the widow of Thomas John Magee who died January 18, 1972. She was the daughter of Franklin Haines Newswanger and Grace Elizabeth Ankrim.

A resident of Lancaster County since 1946, she retired in May 1997 after 15 years with the Credit Bureau of Lancaster County, Inc., as a part-time office employee. Janet was an avid golfer, and enjoyed Wednesdays off to play golf and played well into her 70’s.

Janet operated Magee Refuse Disposal Service with her husband Tom from 1962 until 1979, as second-generation owners, and with her son, John, after her husband’s passing.

An astute business woman, Janet was inspirational to her children and friends in her life. She was also very private, enjoying home and her garden, making holidays special for her family, and had many delicious secret recipes such as homemade spaghetti sauce, or homemade iced tea on a hot summer day.

She was a 1942 graduate of the former Honey Brook High School, Honey Brook, PA; 1946 graduate of Temple University, Philadelphia, with a B.S. in Business. Janet was a member of James Buchanan Chapter No. 315, Order of the Eastern Star (O.E.S.), and was bestowed with an esteemed 50-year pin on January 3, 2001 at a meeting of the O.E.S. Janet also was a long-time member of Meadia Heights Golf Club, and the Hershey region of the Antique Automobile Club of America, Inc. Janet played bridge with several clubs for half a century, and was a founding member of “The Gretna Five” group of women who enjoyed vacationing with their extended families at Mt. Gretna.

Janet’s faith was strong; she loved attending the First Methodist Church of Lancaster, where she was a dedicated member. She enjoyed travel in her middle years to places as near as the North Museum, in Lancaster, and as far as Taiwan, Thailand, and Scandinavia.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia L. Magee-Nemetz, wife of Gregory J. Nemetz, Richfield, OH; a son, John T. Magee, of Lancaster; and sister, Sara L. Schmid, widow of Edward G. Schmid, West Chester, PA. Others of special mention include a long-term group of friends, neighbors, young and young-at-heart whom she loved dearly.
