Ione Levan Dorwart
Ione LeVan Dorwart, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 after a brief stay at Hospice of Lancaster County-Mt. Joy. Ione was a lifelong resident of Lancaster. She was the daughter of the late John J. and Miriam Thompson LeVan. Ione was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Lancaster. She and her husband, Noel S. Dorwart, celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on October 22, 2010.
Ione attended The Shippen School, McCaskey High School and graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1941. She graduated from West Chester State Teachers College in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Health and Physical Education. Her first teaching job was at Elizabethtown High School in 1946 where Ione introduced girl’s field hockey into the sports program. From 1959 until she retired in 1985, Ione was a member of the Physical Education Department at Millersville University. Along with her teaching duties, Ione coached the University’s Field Hockey and Girl’s Basketball Teams. In addition, for many years, she served as the advisor to Millersville’s Dolphin Club where she directed the annual synchronized swimming water shows. Ione was a USFHA official for high school and college field hockey games and was a member of the Lancaster Field Hockey team in the 1950’s. In 1957, she and her husband began Camp VAN DOR, a family- run local day camp for children which continued for 47 years at their residence on Dorsea Road.
As a community volunteer, Ione was involved with the Lancaster Red Cross where she served on the Board for a number of years. She was awarded a 50-year service pin for her active involvement with Water Safety Programs throughout the county. She also served on the Lancaster Library Board, the Hempfield Area Recreation Commission, and in 1993 she was the first woman to be named Honorary Chairperson of the Lancaster Recreation Commission Senior Games. In addition, Ione was a member of the Junior League of Lancaster where she served on many committees.
After she and her husband retired in 1985, they traveled throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Summers were happily spent with family and friends at their home in Stone Harbor, NJ.
Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Louise, wife of J. Scott Ulrich of Lancaster, and Sally I. Dorwart, wife of Quentin C. Clark of Mount Pleasant, SC; a beloved granddaughter, Kathryn, wife of William Tyler Lowry of Lancaster; and a sister, Janet, wife of Rolland King, Jr. of Millersville. She was preceded in death by a brother, John J. LeVan, Jr.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a funeral service from Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, PA on Saturday, March 12th, at 10:30 A.M. Friends may call at Bethany Presbyterian Church on Saturday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service. Interment in Conestoga Memorial Park.
