Helen K. Smoker, 92, a resident of Landis Homes, was called home by her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. Mrs. Smoker was a former resident of Lancaster and of Naples, FL.

She was the wife of the late David Renno Smoker who died in 2002. Born March 17, 1916 in Akron, she was the daughter of the late Harvey K. and Anna M. Buckwalter Buch.

Mrs. Smoker was a member of the East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church where she had been a Sunday School teacher and was involved with the sewing circle. She was a graduate of West Lampeter High School Class of 1934.

Helen began drawing and painting as a young child which she continued throughout her entire life. She was known for her Pennsylvania and European folk art as well as pine needle baskets that combined her artistic and craft talents. Her numerous handmade quilts have been documented in Lancaster and Chester Counties and she has been the subject of oral history and video interviews by the Lancaster Heritage Center, Chester County Historical Society and the University of Delaware. She was a member of the Wally Byum Airstream Association, on the volunteer committee at Landis Valley Museum, a Bible School teacher at Lyndon Mennonite Church, an arts and crafts instructor in Naples, FL, a member of the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley in Ephrata; and was involved with the Schmucker and Smoker Family Association. She was involved in converting the Moorhead Manor Retirement Community in Naples, FL into a real estate cooperative and served as the Women’s Club President.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the excellent care provided by the staff and volunteers of Landis Homes Retirement Community and Hospice of Lancaster County.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane L.S. wife of Lester Davidson of Glenmoore, and Marie A. wife of H. Eugene Breneman of Willow Street; two sons, Albert R. husband of Ruth Smoker of Felton, and Claude D. husband of Donna Smoker of Willow Street; eight grandchildren, Christina and Randall Davidson, Sean, Todd and Shendra Smoker, Kendra Mitchell, and Daryl and Joel Breneman; seven great grandsons, Hunter and Blaise Davidson, Matthew, Jonny and Mikey Breneman, and Cameron and Brody Smoker.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. at West Bethany Chapel at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, PA with the Rev. Ron Adams officiating. Friends may greet the family on Saturday evening from 6:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Private interment in the Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Smoker’s memory may be made to the Landis Homes Caring Fund, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, PA 17543
