Harriet (Chua) Yang

d. April 14, 2010

Harriet (Chua) Yang, 88, of Lancaster, PA, peacefully entered eternal life on Wednesday, April 14 at The Glen of Willow Valley.

The third of 13 children, she was born in Xiamen (Amoy), China on July 20, 1921 and lived in China and the Philippines prior to her arrival in the U.S. in 1949. In addition to her schooling in China, she earned Bachelor and Masters degrees from the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. For many years, she was a highly regarded neighborhood piano teacher.

She was deeply blessed by the Mary Leaman family (missionaries to China) and married Ih-Cheo Yang in 1955 at the Leaman home in Paradise, PA. Although the couple would live the next 50+ years of their lives in various places in New Jersey and Florida, they would return in 2006 to Lancaster County — the place where their married lives began.

Harriet was a faithful follower of Jesus, a devoted sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, and a servant-hearted woman who poured her life into others through her joyous and generous hospitality and self-sacrifice. A woman of intentional simplicity, all of her life energies were focused on blessing others.

Her absence will be keenly felt by many, most especially her biggest fans who include: Ih-Cheo Yang (her husband of 55 years); son Thomas J. Yang of Stevens Point, WI (and wife Jenni and daughters Olivia and Megan); son Robert E. Yang of Cherry Hill, NJ (and wife Jessie); daughter Rila Yang Hackett of Lancaster, PA (and husband Don and children Ian, Brynn, and Colin); and many beloved sisters and brothers who live all over the U.S., Canada, and the Philippines.

The Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 140 East Orange St., Lancaster on Monday, April 19, at 11 a.m. Private interment will be at the convenience of the family. The family will receive visitors at the church on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to Ambassadors for Christ, Inc., 21 Ambassador Drive, Paradise, PA 17562.
