Elroy G Schmeck, Jr.

Elroy G “Duey” Schmeck, Jr. passed away at Penn Medicine LGH Hospital on July 16, 2026. Born in Reading to the late Elroy Sr. and Shirley Schmeck, Duey was the loving husband of Gerri (Taylor) Schmeck for 25 years.

Duey graduated in 1972 from Muhlenberg High School and started working on nuclear plants as a structural designer at age 17 for WorleyParsons, Ltd. of Reading and retired after 46 years. His interests included Harley Davidson motorcycles, muscle cars, NASCAR, Dallas Cowboys, billiards, and target shooting. Duey also had a great love for animals and had many dogs and cats during his lifetime.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Danielle (Leonard) Schmeck Bennett of Shillington, Jennifer Schmeck of Roseville, CA, a brother Gene (Cindy) Schmeck of Muhlenberg, and six grandchildren. Duey was preceded in death by a sister, Debra Bare.

A graveside service will be held Friday, July 24, 2026, at 11am at Charles Evans Cemetery, 1119 Centre Ave, Reading PA 19601. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Duey’s memory can be sent to: Anne B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, 2102 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.
