Elizabeth (Betsy Smith) Martin

Elizabeth (Betsy Smith) Martin, 89, passed away July 27, 2026, at her residence at Willow Valley, PA. She is survived by her son Douglas Martin, married to Katie Martin, of Downingtown, PA, and a daughter, the Rev. Amy Martin, Newtown, PA, married to the Rev. Robert Blezard.

Born in Lancaster and raised in the Greenfield area of East Lampeter Township, Betsy was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Martin (12/27/2016), her siblings George (Bill) William (Josephine) Smith, Richard Smith (survived by his wife Doris), Barbara Ann (Harold) Landis, Patricia (Dave) Eby, David Smith; and her parents, George Martin (Thelma Viola Leaman) Smith.

Betsy was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lancaster. Betsy graduated from East Lampeter High School (1955) and Albright College (1959) with a BS in Home Economics, and with later studies worked as a Licensed, Registered Dietician at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lancaster, WIC in New York State and the Lehigh Valley Hospital system.

Betsy had a creative and exceptional mind with many interests including reading, poetry, theology, music, cooking, the arts, and church choir. Betsy was a classically trained musician yet also played the piano by ear – and was known by family and friends for her impromptu piano playing – most recently at Willow Valley where she often drew a crowd. She also enjoyed international bicycling and hiking trips, and gardening with her late husband Don (married 9/10/1960).

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM Saturday August 29 at Willow Valley Spring Run, Willow Street, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Betsy’s memory to: First UMC Chancel Choir (note Chancel Choir on memo line) or Anchorage Lancaster - both sent to First UMC, 29 East Walnut Street, Lancaster, PA 17602.
