Elaine E. L. Lyons, 91, beloved wife of the late Dr. Gilbert B. Lyons, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital.
Elaine and Gil celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June 2016 before Gil’s passing in August of that same year. Together they shared a remarkable marriage built upon faith, family, friendship, service, and a deep commitment to their community.
Known for her warmth, gracious hospitality, and genuine interest in others, Elaine spent a lifetime building friendships, strengthening her community, and creating cherished memories for family and friends.
Born on December 10, 1934, in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Elaine was the daughter of Lloyd H. Lebo and Elizabeth S. Lebo. She graduated from Lebanon High School in 1952 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Millersville State Teachers College in 1956. During her undergraduate years, she was highly involved in student leadership and campus organizations, serving as Class Treasurer during both her junior and senior years. She was recognized in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, served as Vice President of Welfare for the Women’s Community Association, and was active in both the Future Teachers of America and the Association for Childhood Education International.
Committed to lifelong learning, Elaine returned to Millersville State College and earned her Master of Education degree in 1978. She continued her studies throughout her career, earning Reading Specialist certification and credentials as a Geography Consultant. In 1998, she received the Outstanding Service Award from the Millersville University Alumni Association in recognition of her dedication and service to the university and its alumni.
One week after graduating from Millersville, Elaine married Gil, beginning a partnership that would span more than six decades. The newlyweds moved to Arlington, Virginia, where Elaine began her teaching career as a fourth-grade teacher while Gil served in the United States Navy Dental Corps, helping prepare Marines stationed at Quantico for overseas deployment. Upon completion of his military service, they returned to Lancaster, where Gil established his dental practice and they began raising their family.
After their children, Janet and Gil Jr., entered school, Elaine resumed her teaching career and spent 35 years with the Manheim Township School District. She taught kindergarten, pre-first, first, and second grades and concluded her distinguished career at Bucher Elementary School, where she retired as the last remaining original faculty member hired when the school opened. Many former students fondly remember “Walter T. Bear,” the classroom teddy bear who accompanied them home on weekends, holidays, and summer vacations, inspiring creative writing and cherished childhood memories.
For more than thirty years, Elaine and her family enjoyed their beloved cottage in Mt. Gretna. What began as summers filled with miniature golf, Jigger Shop visits, lake outings, and Fourth of July fireworks evolved into decades of treasured family traditions. The cottage became the gathering place for Halloween parties, New Year’s celebrations, annual crab feasts, Bridge Club dinners, Memorial Day porch openings, and the Mt. Gretna Outdoor Art Show. Elaine also became deeply involved with the Mt. Gretna Theatre, organizing opening-night receptions for numerous productions. Both Elaine and Gil served on the Mt. Gretna Board of Directors and volunteered for many years at the Mt. Gretna Art Show.
Elaine’s community involvement extended well beyond Mt. Gretna. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star Chapter 501 in Lancaster, a member of the Junior League, an avid traveler, accomplished cook, and talented baker. Her pumpkin and mincemeat pies, blueberry scones, warm peach pies, sugar cookies, and “mud-cake” birthday cakes became beloved family traditions. Elaine and Gil were enthusiastic bridge players who enjoyed a couples’ bridge group that met regularly for more than fifty years. Later in life, she participated in additional bridge groups and, after moving to Willow Valley Communities, learned to play the dulcimer and performed in holiday concerts.
Elaine was a faithful and devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster for 68 years. She taught Sunday School, served as a Deacon and Moderator of the Deacons, completed training as a Stephen Minister, participated in a pastoral search committee, and was a member of the Bell Choir. To commemorate the church’s 250th anniversary, Elaine and Gil hosted a celebratory picnic at their farm. For many years, Elaine lovingly arranged sanctuary flowers, created weekly boutonnieres for church ushers, and coordinated the baking of countless cookies for the church’s annual Joy and Sharing of Christmas program.
Above all, Elaine will be remembered not for her accomplishments, but for the love, kindness, and generosity she shared so freely with others. She possessed a rare gift for making people feel welcome, valued, and cared for. Whether she was opening the doors of her Mt. Gretna cottage to family and friends, preparing a favorite dessert for a holiday gathering, arranging flowers for her church, or simply offering a listening ear, Elaine’s greatest joy came from bringing happiness to those around her.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, treasured friend, and gifted teacher whose influence extended far beyond the classroom. Her home was a place where everyone felt welcome, where laughter was plentiful, and where traditions were lovingly preserved. Family celebrations, church gatherings, bridge clubs, neighborhood friendships, and community events were all enriched by her thoughtful attention to detail and genuine concern for others.
Elaine had a remarkable ability to remember the little things that mattered—a birthday, a favorite dessert, an encouraging note, a warm greeting, or a simple act of kindness. She believed deeply in the importance of family, friendship, faith, and service. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and unwavering compassion touched countless lives over the years.
Those fortunate enough to know Elaine will remember a woman of grace, intelligence, faith, and quiet strength who lived her life with purpose and gratitude. Her legacy is found not only in the generations of students she taught, but in the countless family members, friends, neighbors, church members, and former students who were blessed by her kindness and example.
Elaine was predeceased by her brothers L. Peter Lebo, and Keith H. Lebo both of Lebanon. She is survived by her daughter, Janet E. Lyons and her spouse, Robin A. Stokes, of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania; her son, Gilbert B. Lyons, Jr., and his wife, Carlie B. Lyons, of Lancaster; her grandchildren, Britt L. Taylor and her husband, Tom A. Taylor, of Manhattan, New York; Waverley N. Lyons of Brooklyn, New York; and Gilbert “Pierce” Lyons of Lancaster.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, 140 East Orange Street, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with the Rev. Dan Snyder officiating. Family and friends will be received at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be private in the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Gardens at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund or to the Mt. Gretna Theatre.
As a reflection of Elaine’s joyful spirit and her love of life, family, friendship, and celebration, the family invites those attending her memorial service to wear bright colors. Elaine brought warmth, kindness, and light wherever she went, and it is fitting that her life be celebrated with the vibrant colors that so beautifully reflect the happiness she shared with others.
And, if you are so inclined, the family asks that in Elaine’s memory you perform an act of kindness for someone else; a simple gesture that would have reflected the generosity, compassion, warmth, and joyful spirit by which she lived her life.
