In Memorial

Clyde M. Whitaker, 91, of 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia, PA died June 18, 2010 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community.

Born in Lancaster on September 11, 1918, he was the son of the late Ira and Gertrude Mays Whitaker. He had been married to the late Ethel Falk who died in February, 2000.

Mr. Whitaker was a graduate of the former Lancaster Boys High School, class of mid-1937 where he was concert-master of the orchestra. He then enrolled in the Accounting program at Lancaster Business College.

While still in college, he was offered a position at the former Eshelman Motor Co. where he remained until it was sold to Jones Pontiac Co. He continued his employment there, becoming office/business manager and treasurer until his retirement in August, 1982.

He was a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Church, and former member of National Association of Cost Accountants, National Office Management Association, and secretary and director of the former Lancaster Milling Co. He was also a former member of the Lancaster Optimist Club.

Mr. Whitaker enjoyed playing croquet in Buchanan Park and walking around the lakes at Long’s Park and Willow Valley, attending outdoor musical concerts, and spending time with his family and their activities.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol W., wife of John W. Byers of Lancaster; two granddaughters, Kimberly, wife of Michael Herr of Lititz and Jennifer, wife of Jason Kopp of Dallastown; four great-grandsons, Thomas and Nicholas Herr and Justin and Jackson Kopp.
