Chester A. Bitterman, Jr.

Chester A. Bitterman, Jr., 93, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the Glen at Willow Valley Communities. He was the loving husband of Carol (Smedley) Ohlson and was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Bitterman who died in November , 2015.

Born in Lancaster on August 4, 1933, he was the son of the late Chester A. Bitterman, Sr. and Anna (Hess) Bitterman.

A lifelong resident of Lancaster County, Chester was the owner and operator of Bitterman Scale Company, where he built a reputation for honesty, integrity, and exceptional service. He took great pride in his work and the relationships he developed with customers throughout the region.

Chester devoted his lifetime to involvement in and support for local and world-wide mission ministries.

In his spare time, he enjoyed water sports and cars (having built a car and a boat for himself).

In addition to his wife, Carol, he is survived by his children, Curtis (Diane) Bitterman of Lancaster, Carol (Richard) Statler of New Providence, Craig (Dawn) Bitterman of Strasburg, Grant (Joanne) Bitterman of Willow Street, Chris Bitterman of Lexington, North Carolina, and Cindy (Peter) Tuckey of Leola. In addition to his parents and his first wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by his oldest son and daughter, Chester Allen III and Connie Formby and grandson Ethan Tuckey. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, his brothers, Norman R. (Lena) Bitterman of Blue Bell and Richard L. (Donna) Bitterman of Strasburg,

Family and friends are invited to a funeral on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 1:00 PM at DeBord Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 141 East Orange Street, Lancaster, PA 17602. A viewing will be held from 12:00 noon until the time of the funeral. Interment will follow in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.
