Bertha Houston May

Bertha Houston May, also known as Berti, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2024, at the age of 93 in Lancaster, PA. She was born in August 1, 1930, in Milford DE, to the late Henry and Estella Sapp.

Berti was a remarkable woman who will be remembered for her generosity, compassion, and intelligence. She had a genuine desire to help others and was always there to support anyone in need. Berti outlived her nine siblings, which she found both puzzling and humbling. Her family was her top priority, and she cherished the memories of family gatherings and activities.

Berti is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Houston Willey and Larry Willey, as well as her son and daughter-in-law, Owens Houston, Jr. and Karen. She also leaves behind her stepson, Bob May and stepdaughter Lori May, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Berti had a large extended family, including many nieces and nephews.

Berti received her education from Houston Delaware Primary School and Milford Delaware High School. Throughout life, she had varied careers as a homemaker, organizational clerk, and secretary at Staufers.

Berti found solace and strength in her faith and was a member of Willow Street Church. She found comfort in her religious community and the values they shared. In her free time, Berti indulged in her hobbies, including sewing, painting and coloring. These activities brought her joy and allowed her to express her creativity.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in memory of Berti to the Heart Association. The family would greatly appreciate any support towards this cause, that was close to Berti’s heart.

Berti will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her kind heart, unwavering love for her family and dedication to helping others will always be remembered. May she rest in eternal peace.

A visitation will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 at 10:00 AM at DeBord Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange Street, Lancaster, PA with a Memorial Service starting at 11:00 AM. Interment will be Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the Milford Community Cemetery,(Odd Fellows Section) 850 N. Dupont Blvd., Milford, DE 19963.
