Arlene Weaver Moore

Arlene Weaver Moore of Lancaster died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on March 11, 2011. A seventh generation Lancaster County resident, Arlene was born at home in Bird-in-Hand on April 20, 1912.  Arlene was the daughter of Harry Buckwalter Weaver and Mary Kurtz Rupp. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Wicklein Moore, and by her brothers, Marvin, Frank, and H. Carl Weaver.

Arlene was a graduate of East Lampeter High School and Lancaster Business College. She attended Pennsylvania State University where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Arlene was also a charter member of the Hempfield Women’s Club and a long-time member of the Lancaster Church of the Brethren.

Anyone who knew Arlene knew she was extremely ­generous in her love and friendship of others. She ­volunteered her time to many organizations, including Meals-on-Wheels and also the Rohrerstown Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Arlene was an avid bridge player for 85 years and enjoyed tennis, golf, and swimming. Always a nature lover, she took great joy in hiking, gardening, and spending time at the beach.

She will be lovingly remembered by her four children: Mary Alice Shirk (B.Thomas Shirk), Ann Moore (Frank Byrne), George Moore (Cheryl Moore), and David Moore (Diane Moore), her six granddaughters: Jennifer Shirk, Margery Grill, Aimee Noffsinger, Eileen Smedley, Sarah Moore, and Kelsey Bigelow, and her eight great-grandchildren: Maggie, Cooper, Sam, Josie, Fiona, Sydney, Thomas, and Harrison, as well as a host of relatives and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at Woodcrest Villa’s Eagle Commons on March 19, 2011 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lancaster County Conservancy, 117 Southwest End Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603 or to Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, PA 17601.
