Anna K. Walters
Anna Moore was born in Philadelphia on Washington’s birthday, 1922, and died in Quarryville on September 30, 2020, but most of her life- over 90 years of it- was spent in the Landisville area.
Adopted by Ida Bender King and Adam Bigler King, her new name was Anna Bender King, with the nickname “Kingy.” She grew up on a farm at Bamford. Elderberry thickets grew along Swarr Run on the other side of Old Harrisburg Pike, and Anna used to hitch up the mules to drive over and stand in the wagon bed to pick berries.
She learned to play the clarinet and enjoyed playing sports, especially tennis, at East Hempfield High School in Landisville.
After graduating in 1939, she went to work in the city as a bookkeeper at Steinman Hardware. During the war she also stood watch as an airplane spotter atop the Griest Building. Fortunately, she neither spotted any enemy aircraft nor fell off the building.
On April 14, 1946, she married Earl Wanner Walters and became Anna King Walters. They built their first home on the edge of Getz’s Woods overlooking the Old Harrisburg Pike and the farmlands rolling away northward. Later they moved into Landisville and built a house on East Avenue before moving into a trailer by the Landisville Post Office where Anna would live for 56 years.
She worked as a ticket seller at the Comet Drive- In Theater and helped harvest tobacco on local farms, then went to work as a secretary for Hempfield School District, retiring after 19 years.
She and Earl travelled across the U.S. to visit her relatives on the West Coast and to attend his 69
th
Infantry Division reunions. They became active with American Legion Post #185, volunteering hundreds of hours at Coatesville VA Hospital over a 30-year span.
Anna was a Life Member of American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 185, Mt. Joy; past President and Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary #5752, Mt. Joy; Partner of “8 and 40” Salons #354 (Lancaster) and #487 (York); and a member of the “Fighting 69
th
” Infantry Division Auxiliary.
In lieu of flowers, Anna requested donations to Reformation Lutheran Church, 2100 Manor Ridge Drive, Lancaster, PA, 17603.
There will be a private graveside service at Concordia Lutheran Church Cemetery.
