Ada Reba “Arbee” Buchwalter Bachman
Ada Reba “Arbee” Buchwalter Bachman of Lancaster went Home to be with her Lord on Friday, January 15th, 2010.
She was the wife of John N. Bachman, Sr. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 15, 2009.
Born in Lancaster City on July 22, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Omar Neff and Ada Ranck Buchwalter.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children: Joyce L., wife of Leon B. Hershey, Jr. of Narvon; John N. Jr., husband of Cynthia O. Bachman of Atlanta; and Lois I. Bachman of Lancaster. Also surviving are two grandchildren and four great grandchildren, a sister, Verna B. Flower of Arlington, Virginia, as well as nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
She was a member of First Assembly of God and attended the church from infancy, becoming a member in her teens. She taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir and also served as bookkeeper/receptionist for a number of years.
She had a wide range of office experience, beginning as a part-time receptionist for the Atlee Medical Group while still in high school.
After graduation from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1941, she worked at Hamilton Watch Company as secretary to the Chief Watch Designer until she married, and some years later as secretary to the Chief Engineer. She served as secretary to the Business Manager of Houghton College while her husband was a student there.
After returning to Lancaster, she worked as bookkeeper/receptionist for the late Benjamin R. Groff, Builder/Developer and later assisted her husband in land developing.
After the children were grown, she worked for nearly fourteen years as executive secretary at Watt & Shand Department Store.
As a homemaker, she and her husband entertained missionaries, ministers, friends and relatives from all over the United States and approximately 30 countries around the world.
She expressed her love for her Lord in many ways, including singing and playing hymns and spiritual songs at the piano. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing-designing many of her outfits. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, including Hawaii, and also Canada, Mexico, England and Europe.
The memorial service and interment for Arbee will be private and held at the convenience of the family. If desired, contributions in her memory may be made to the Missionary Fund of First Assembly of God, 1025 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603.
