On December 22, 1938 Goldie Marie Yorke was born to Robert and Elsie Benson in Lancaster, PA. She transitioned to eternal rest on August 1, 2021. She was the oldest of her siblings, Fayetta Boyer, Robert “Bud” Benson (deceased) and Barbara Williams Brown (deceased). Goldie was affectionately known as “Snookie” to her family and friends.
Goldie attended McCaskey High School in Lancaster, PA and after graduating she attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD where she met her husband Robert Yorke. They were married in 1959 and after moving to different states due to army assignments, the family settled in New York City in 1968. Goldie later went on to obtain her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education at City College in New York City. Goldie thoroughly enjoyed teaching children and touched many lives at U.F.B.C.O. Day Care Center where she worked for over 10 years until her retirement. Goldie was also an ardent gardener, painter, and all around creative artist. Having a few of her pieces displayed at a local gallery was one of her greatest joys and accomplishments.
Goldie leaves to cherish her memories her children Troye Marie Yorke, Mark Anthony Yorke, and Rachael Yorke-Comer. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Morrissa Yorke, Ashina Yorke, Saida Yorke, Rashidi Yorke and Avani Comer as well as great-grand children Madison Yorke and Eliam Rodriguez Yorke. Son-Law Roy Comer, Jr., nieces Anna “Cookie” Williams-Plowden and Michelle Boyer. Nephews David Williams, Shaki Wilson, William Boyer Jr., Damion Wilson, Christopher Boyer and a host of additional family and friends.

Dear Family of Goldie M. Yorke (Benson),
In reading the notice about Goldie’s death, I just had to write to her Family. Goldie and I had the same last name of “Benson.” As students at J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster, we were seated alphabetically in the same homeroom for three years–naturally we got to know one another fairly well! Goldie was a quiet, but very warm person, and I highly valued our friendship. Many years later, while waiting in Lancaster at the train station and headed to NYC, a woman approached and asked if I was Debbie Benson–it was Goldie! We agreed to sit together and had the best visit ever–a non-stop chat the entire three hours! She told me about her family, her work at a pre-school and her almost completed college degree! We shared many similarities in terms of three children and teaching. What a valuable friendship, reconnecting after so many years had passed.
I send my deepest sympathy and will keep Goldie and her Family in my thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.
Most sincerely,
Rachael and Family:
I continue to keep you in my prayers during this difficult time. May your beautiful mother rest in peace.
Love,
Arlean
