Ackerman Gerald WEB

Gerald H. “Jerry” Ackerman, Sr., 71, formerly of Lancaster, PA, passed away into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday, January 23, 2015, at home, after a four-year battle with several significant health issues. Born on February 13, 1943, in Columbia, PA, he was the son of the late Curvin S. and Clara M. (Koller) Ackerman. He was the husband of Susan L. (Smith) Ackerman of Indianapolis, IN, and they were able to celebrate their 50th anniversary on December 6, 2014.

He was a 1961 graduate of McCaskey High School and he served as a Yeoman 3rd Class in the US Navy for six years; two years active duty. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 2000 as a letter carrier for thirty-seven years. After retirement, he delivered flowers part-time for The Boutonniere Shoppe in Lancaster. He enjoyed listening to 50’s music, was a sports-fanatic and an avid bowler all of his life; rolling a 300 game at Leisure Lanes in 1971. He last bowled in August 2011 with his son and his dear friend, Howard Miller, who was visiting from PA. Other favorite past-times included taking care of and enjoying the company of he and his wife’s cats, and walking; always carrying dog biscuits to feed his furry friends along the way. He was known as the “classical jokester” with both adults and children.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kimberly N., wife of Jeff Worley of Willow Street; a son, Gerald H. “Jerry”, Jr., husband of Mitzi, and grandchildren; Julianne, Ben, Ashlyn, Abigail, and Olivia all of McCordsville, IN; a sister, Judy Morton, of Landisville; sister-in-law Norma of Lancaster; a brother, Barry (Sally), of Brownstown. A brother, Kenneth (Ken) preceded him in death. Also surviving him are many nieces & nephews on both sides of the family that he loved to tease!

A former fifty-year plus member of the former Abbeyville Road Christian Church, Lancaster, he later attended Onward in Indianapolis, IN, before his illnesses.

A funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 31, 2015, from the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA. Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, 845 Laurel Hill Rd., Columbia, PA. A viewing will precede the service at the Funeral Home starting at 9am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his memory be made to Seasons Hospice Foundation, 6400 Shafer Ct., Suite 700, Rosemont, IL, 60018.
