Evelyn M. Risser, 82, of Lancaster, passed into the safety of the arms of Jesus on Friday, July 13th after a courageous battle with cancer at Country Meadows of Lancaster. Born Nov. 26, 1929 in Centerville, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Wissler) Holbein. She was the beloved wife of the late Jay F. Risser to whom she was married for 60 years.

She was a charter member of Hempfield United Methodist Church, where she taught 3rd and 4th grade Sunday School for 35 years, sang in the choir, and attended evening prayer meetings. She loved the Lord with all her heart and served Him faithfully in too many ways to count. She continued her ministry to others at Country Meadows as well. She had many friends that she cherished along her life’s journey.

Evelyn cherished her family and was especially fond of children. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She also extended her unconditional love to spouses and partners of all family members. Her grandchildren will always remember their birthdays being celebrated with their grandmother by a shopping trip for a birthday gift. She will be greatly missed by all.

Surviving are: 2 sons, Theodore husband of Kimberly Risser of Millersville, and Timothy husband of Kathryn Risser of Manheim; a daughter, Susan wife of Thomas Bair of Wrightsville; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clyde husband of Margie Holbein; 2 sisters, Mary wife of the late Richard Kahler and Rosie wife of Fred Joost. She was preceded in death by a brother Herbert Holbein.

The family would like to extend a warm thank you to all of Evelyn’s caregivers.

A memorial service will be held from Hempfield United Methodist Church 3050 Marietta Ave. Lancaster on Wednesday July 18, 2012 at 11 AM. The family will greet friends immediately following the service. Private interment will be held in Silver Spring Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Hospice of Lancaster County P. O. Box 4125 Lancaster, PA 17604-4125 or to the Country Meadows Co-Workers Foundation 830 Cherry Dr. Hershey, Pa 17033.

Condolence from Kristine Pitts on July 16th, 2012 12:09 pm

So saddened to hear that dear, sweet and funny Aunt Evie has passed. Although I’m glad she’s no longer suffering and is in the arms of Jesus and reunited with Uncle Jay, I know the world will be a less brighter place without her in it. Her wit and love for life touched everyone she came in contact with. Even while struggling with illness she touched and was loved by all the nurses and medical staff that took care of her, with many saying she was their favorite patient. Not surprising but still a testament to what a wonderful person she was and how she shined God’s love and warmth to those around her. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to you Ted, Tim & Susie. I was blessed with a wonderful Aunt and you with a wonderful mother. We will all miss her.
Love and Hugs,

Dear Ted, Tim and Susie,
I am sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. She was one of the nicest people I’ve ever known. She must have had the patience of a saint to raise you three fire crackers! Now she gets some alone time with her husband.
My prayers are with you at this time of loss.

Condolence from Linda (Haller) Fincher on August 6th, 2012 12:18 pm

I can’t begin to tell you what an impact Mrs. Risser had on my young Christian life. I was in her 3rd and 4th grade Sunday School class. She taught Sunday School and VBS with pure joy and pure love. I understood at a young age the source of her joy and love was from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I later came to understand the depth of her faith and commitment to the Lord. I loved her dearly. It was a rich blessing in my life to know her. My prayers are with all of the family members. Love, Linda
