Erma P. Asper

In Memorial

Erma P. Asper, 95, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at her home.  Born in Safe Harbor, PA, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Abbie Waller Peters.  Her husband, Preston R. Asper preceded her in death.

Erma attended Lancaster Girl’s High School, and was a longtime member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church in Lancaster, PA.

Erma spent many years volunteering with Hospice & Community Care, where she happily spent many hours doing what she loved.  She had been a volunteer since 1999, where she served many roles, including foyer volunteer, an officer volunteer for Patient Accounts, and a Labor Day and special events volunteer, which included selling Auction raffle tickets.  Erma received the “Spirit of Hospice Award” in 2006 and was honored for serving 5,000 hours in 2012.  On her most recent birthday, Erma was treated to a surprise 95th Birthday Celebration by “her many adoring fans” at hospice.

Surviving are her two sisters, Dorothy J. Moffett, of Lancaster, and Elizabeth M., wife of the late Eugene C. Wingender, also of Lancaster

Contributions in her name may be made to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 4125 Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.

Oh how I loved Erma…we all loved Erma! I remember so clearly the day I learned that I had purchased the home of her best friend “Jane” and how we talked about her memories of all the wonderful things that had happened for her in that place. She was so pleased that someone she knew would make more wonderful memories within its walls. One of my greatest regrets, is that although we often talked about having her come to my home and revisit a place she held so dear, we never actually carried out that task. I will forever treasure my memories of her smile, sense of humor, and hugs she would always make sure to give and receive.

Erma or (Aunt Erma) as I knew her, was a wonderful person. I will always cheerish the memories of Sunday dinners at aunt Erma’s with her nephew Barry, uncle Bud, Dot and aunt Betty. I often wondered how the three sisters were doing and I regret not getting back in touch. Some of the happiest times of my life were when I knew the family. I am very saddened to hear of aunt Erma’s passing, but I know she is with the Lord, uncle Bud and Barry.

Oh the laughs I shared with Miss Erma as I liked to refer to her. Spunky, Spit-Fire, Independent, Stubborn – all terms of endearment. I loved the stories of when Erma was young and her friends and her would sneak into dances at Rocky Springs or other escapades. Life was probably always interesting spending time with Erma!
I consider myself blessed to have known her and consider her part of the family.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of her family and friends who will miss Erma dearly.
If I could offer Erma any words of wisdom I would say if the Father Almighty asks you to take care of the dogs, cats or bunnies, please go easy on your response.
May there be a Bon-Ton where you are Miss Erma with lots of great purses and shoes!

Erma has been and still is someone I’d like to be like as I grow older! Strong, willful and Independant. I’m fortunate to have known you and pray that you are still as spirited as ever! God bless you and may your family find comfort in the legacy you gave to us all!

Aunt Erma was one of the few people who could make me laugh consistently, no matter how low I was feeling. she always had a way of making things seem not quite so bad. she approached her illnes in the same way: “I’m going to be back to Hospice after the holidays, I’m just going to rest a little, they are holding my job for me”. Erma always put a positive spin on every situation. she made you feel loved and special, no matter who you were. she will be sorely missed. I used to tell her:”I’m going to be just like you when i grow up”. I hope I can be half the person she was.

Seeing that big old white car come tooling through the parking lot with Erma’s little head peering up over the steering wheel always brought a smile to my face – it still does… Erma, you will be missed by SO many…
