Ellen M. Finck Cassaday, 99, of 675 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA, died Thursday, March 4 2021, at the Glen at Willow Valley Communities. She was married for 61 years to Warren E. Cassaday Jr., who pre-deceased her in 2006.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1922, she was the daughter of Camille E. Finck and Anna Chick Finck. She was raised in Westmont NJ.

She graduated from Helene Fuld School of Nursing at West Jersey Hospital in Camden, NJ, with her RN. She served as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army during WWII overseas in France in the nursing corps. Immediately after VE Day, she married Warren, who was also in the Army, in Paris, France, in May of 1945. They raised their family in Pitman, NJ, where she taught Sunday School and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. She worked at Underwood Hospital and then as a School Nurse at the Campus School at Glassboro State Teachers College. During this time, she completed her BSN at The College of New Jersey. Later in her career, she taught health, home economics, driver’s education, and physical education at several area high schools. She retired as a private duty nurse.

She and Warren retired to Florida where they enjoyed the beautiful weather and beach for many years. She was a gifted artist who painted many seascapes in oil. She traveled and cruised extensively and visited 6 of the 7 continents. Because her father was born in France, she loved everything French including her little dog Pierre. She epitomized the French phrase “Joie de vivre”. She adored her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and was dearly loved.

Her memberships include First United Methodist Church in Lancaster, PA, Eastern Star, VFW, and the American Legion.

Surviving is a son, Robert W. Cassaday Sr., husband of Barbara Olson Cassaday, of East Brunswick, NJ, and John Cummings Jr., Son-In-Law, of Bloomfield, IN. Her daughter, Nancy E. Cummings,  pre-deceased her in 2014. She is also survived by her twin, Anna Finck Neff, of California. She has 5 grandchildren, Robert W. Cassaday Jr. (Christina), Jennifer Cassaday Harvey (Nathan), Shannon Cassaday-Ho (Calvin), John Cummings III, and Matthew Cummings (Danielle).  She also has 12 great grandchildren.

Interment will be private and will be held at the convenience of the family in the Arlington National Cemetery.

To the family of Ellen,
Even though we are members of the same church, I met Ellen while singing with the Willow Valley Manor choir. Ellen always impressed me as a woman who was so independent, so artistic, so fun loving, and an all around awesome woman. I remember once she invited me to her apartment. She made me laugh so hard by her quirky comments and I just liked her so much. I remember when Warren died. Being with her through that time as her funeral director was extremely rewarding and I remember it very well. I am sure her family will miss her tremendously as will her Willow Valley and Church families.

I first met Aunt Ellen on July 22,1971, the day before Dave and I married. She was so exuberant and funny, I will always remember her as being kind, loving and so much fun. We will miss her!

I have such fond memories of Aunt Ella when she and Warren let me live with them for a short time when I was in my 20’s. She kept me from being homesick for my own mom, her twin. They had similar habits and an exuberance for life! I have great memories when the twins would get together and couldn’t stop laughing! My condolences to the whole family. I will miss you, Aunt Ella! Your niece, Sandra
