Arthur “Artie” D. Calvert, Jr.

Calvert Web

On Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 11:00 A.M., after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by family and friends, on a rainy morning befitting the way all who knew him felt after his passing, Arthur “Artie” Delmont Calvert, Jr., left this world and passed onto the next.

Born January 3, 1954, Artie who was 60 years old and who was described by many as a gentle giant, leaves behind his eternal companion and wife of 37 years, Wendy Rene Calvert, a fourth grade teacher at Mountville Elementary School.  Also survived by Kelle Ann Hasenauer, wife of Melvin Hasenauer, Jr. of Jonestown, who served in the US Army and the PA Army National Guard and currently works as a healthcare provider;  Kevin Arthur Calvert of Mountville, a Millersville student and PA Army National Guardsman, Melissa Rene Kupka wife of Justin Kupka of Spokane, WA a graduate of BYUI and stay at home mom; and Kyra Lynn Bushey wife of Matthew Bushey a Hempfield High School graduate and stay at home mom.  By six grandchildren, Ethan, Matthew, Elias, Jasper, Ember, and Cora who will greatly miss their “Papa” and one on the way.  His sisters, Charlene Pinkowski of York, Elene Lauckner of Belleview, WA and Verna Darcy of Philadelphia.  Esme N. Oppenheimer, his mother in law, and many other family members across the country will dearly miss their sweet Artie.

Art’s parents were Arthur Calvert, Sr. and Helen Jean Wick Calvert and his step mother was Evelyn Calvert Quickel.  He graduated from York VoTech in 1971.  He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he held many positions in the church and served a faithful mission in the Arcadia, CA area.  Arthur retired as a truck driver from Consolidated Freightways and then spent 8 years as a crossing guard for the Mountville Elementary students.  Artie loved to tinker with computers and other gadgets and he enjoyed the magic of science fiction shows and beautiful cars.  His love of music was only rivaled by his love of Hawaii and he had often dreamt of retiring there.

A service celebrating Art’s life will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1136 Sunwood Drive, Lancaster, PA on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 6:00 P.M.  Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association

Words cannot adequately express the sorrow I feel for your enormous loss. Artie was a sweet and gentle man who loved his wife and family so much. I loved when he would come and have lunch in the faculty room and share her birthday lunches at school with Wendy. I hardly knew this lovely man but he has left his mark and an amazing legacy. God bless you all, lean on God and each other. Hugs.

Artie was a gentle and kind man who loved his job as a crossing guard and interacting with the children. He leaves many memories for those of us who were fortunate enough to have worked with him or called him a friend.
