Shelly Gherke, age 60, of Lancaster PA, passed away on October 24, 2020.  She is survived by her two children, Rachel and Michael David Gherke. Shelly graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1982. She spent her career caring for others as a dietician in numerous hospitals and nursing homes, including Lancaster Regional Medical Center and Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation Hospital.

Besides her children, Shelly is survived by her sister Kelly Hansen, brothers Allen and David Hykes, her nephew Jonathon and Valeen Hykes, and her niece Melissa and Darin Babin, as well as great nieces and nephews – Kiersten Hykes, Madisyn Babin, Carter Babin and Avery Babin, and several cousins.

Shelly loved and cared for her family fiercely; her greatest loves were her children and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Her bright smile and enormous heart will be solemnly missed.

A small service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Lancaster on Saturday at 11am.

My deepest sympathies to Rachel, David, and all of the family. I have been friends with Shelly for almost 50 years. She was one of my favorite people in the world. I loved her and will miss her smiling face, her laughter, and her friendship. My heart is heavy when I think I will never see her or hear her voice. My life is better for having known her .

My sincere sympathy to Shelly’s family. It was a shock to hear she unexpectedly died. Shelly was so nice and willing to help me at the polls during the elections when asked. She also helped distribute campaign literature. She was always willing to help. Shelly was too young to die. This is so hard on the family when a loved one dies unexpectedly. May you RIP, Shelly.

Dear David and Rachel,
My prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time! I have wonderful memories of all our times at church working with you and your mom during youth group and many special events! I also enjoyed visiting at your house and remember a fun campfire in your backyard one time! I hope happy memories of better times will help you both in your sorrow! God Bless:)
